A fixed ratio high voltage high power switched capacitor controller

The LTC7820 is a high-voltage, high-power switched-capacitor controller designed to deliver exceptional efficiency and power density without the need for inductors. Unlike traditional inductor-based buck or boost converters, charge pumps use capacitors to store and transfer energy, offering higher energy density and significantly smaller form factors. This makes them ideal for applications where space and efficiency are critical. However, charge pumps have historically been limited to low-power designs due to challenges such as startup issues, gate drive requirements, and regulation. The LTC7820 overcomes these limitations by providing a robust solution that enables high power density and up to 99% efficiency. It features four N-channel MOSFET gate drivers that can be configured to create voltage dividers, voltage doublers, or negative output converters. For example, it can step down an input of up to 72V to 24V at 7A, or step up 36V to 72V, all while maintaining a 50% duty cycle and a fixed switching frequency. Figure 1 illustrates a 170W voltage doubler circuit using the LTC7820. With a 12V input, it delivers 24V at 7A with a 500kHz switching frequency. Sixteen 16μF X7R ceramic capacitors act as the "span capacitor," efficiently delivering the required output power. The compact design measures approximately 23mm x 16.5mm x 5mm, achieving a power density of 1500W per cubic inch. As shown in Figure 3, the converter achieves a peak efficiency of 98.8%, with full-load efficiency of 98%. This is made possible by soft switching on all four MOSFETs, which minimizes switching losses, and the use of low-voltage MOSFETs, reducing conduction losses. Thermal performance is also impressive. At 23°C ambient temperature with free air flow, the maximum temperature rise of the hot spot is only 35°C, demonstrating the excellent thermal management of the design. The LTC7820 ensures tight load regulation even in open-loop configurations, with minimal voltage drop under full load. Additionally, its startup behavior is optimized to handle slow input voltage ramps, preventing large inrush currents. A disconnect FET or hot-swap controller can be used to control the input slew rate, ensuring smooth and reliable operation. In conclusion, the LTC7820 is a powerful and efficient solution for high-voltage, high-power applications. Its built-in gate drivers, rugged protection features, and high efficiency make it well-suited for bus converters, distributed power systems, communication infrastructure, and industrial environments. Whether you're looking to reduce size, improve efficiency, or simplify thermal management, the LTC7820 offers a compelling alternative to traditional inductor-based designs.
