In 2012, Apple introduced Siri, the first widely recognized smart voice assistant, marking a significant step in the evolution of AI-driven interaction. However, despite its initial hype, it was soon clear that most users didn’t fully embrace this "black technology." Over time, Siri lost its novelty and became just another feature, often criticized for its limited functionality and lack of depth.
Looking back at the development of intelligent voice technology, companies that focused on improving voice recognition reliability made substantial progress. Yet, the core challenge—artificial intelligence’s ability to truly "learn" and understand context—remained difficult to overcome. While the industry has advanced, many systems still rely more on gimmicks than real intelligence.
In China's booming Internet TV market, intelligent voice technology has become a key differentiator. Almost every major brand now incorporates some form of voice control, but the quality and effectiveness vary significantly. To explore how well these systems perform, we tested six popular smart TVs: Hisense VIDAA LED55V1UCZ, Xiaomi TV 4 55-inch, Mini Whale TV 2nd Gen 55-inch, Zushi X55Q, Coolpad 55A3, and PPTV N55.
We simulated everyday user scenarios, testing features like keyword recognition, video search, multi-level commands, and fuzzy instructions. The results were mixed. Some models performed exceptionally well, while others struggled with even basic tasks. Hisense stood out for its quick and accurate responses, exceeding expectations in daily use. Xiaomi also impressed with its ability to handle complex queries and multi-step commands. Micro-Whale offered unique features like dialect support and natural language understanding, making it feel more human-like.
On the other hand, some models had limitations. Zushi X55Q could only handle basic content control, while PPTV N55 relied heavily on keywords and lacked broader functionality. Coolpad 55A3 showed promise with its AI assistant, but still faced challenges with certain types of requests.
Overall, the six TVs demonstrated strong performance, especially when compared to traditional brands. However, the tests involved relatively simple questions, so the true potential of AI voice remains unproven. As the technology continues to evolve, it’s clear that voice is becoming an essential part of the smart home experience.
Companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Baidu are all investing heavily in AI voice, signaling its growing importance. While we’re not yet in a fully intelligent era, the future looks promising. Voice control may soon become the next major interface after keyboards and touchscreens.
If you're considering a smart TV, don't be swayed by flashy features alone. Focus on real usability and practicality. After all, the best tech is the one that works seamlessly in your daily life.
