In today's smartphone market, the race to create a larger phone screen has become one of the hottest trends. On the early morning of September 13, Apple officially launched the iPhone X, its 10th-anniversary flagship model featuring a full-screen OLED display. But Apple wasn’t alone in this trend—before the release of the iPhone X, Xiaomi and Samsung had already introduced their own full-screen smartphones, with more models expected to follow soon.
However, as more manufacturers adopt OLED panels, the key factor limiting the production of full-screen phones is the availability of these panels. Currently, Samsung holds a dominant position in the OLED market, controlling around 90% of the supply. This monopoly makes it difficult for other companies to secure enough panels, especially when Apple places massive orders that could further strain the already tight supply chain.
Apple’s influence in the industry drives demand for full-screen devices even higher. Some analysts predict that from the fourth quarter of 2017 to the first quarter of 2018, full-screen smartphones will begin to flood the market. According to forecasts from foreign media, the adoption rate of full-screen displays in smartphones was around 6% in 2017, but is expected to jump to 50% by 2018 and reach as high as 93% by 2021. Despite this rapid growth, there are still challenges ahead when it comes to mass production.
For example, Apple faced severe shortages with the iPhone X. It took nearly two months for the first batch of units to be delivered after pre-orders opened on October 27. The company only had around 5 million units in stock initially, which pales in comparison to the 200 million iPhones it typically sells each year. Production capacity remains a major bottleneck. At the time, the iPhone X was being produced at a rate of less than 10,000 units per day, leading to long-term shortages for this high-end OLED model.
As the demand for full-screen phones continues to grow, the industry will need to address supply chain limitations and invest in expanding OLED panel production to meet the rising expectations of consumers.
