Human espion will soon become a relic of the past, and the CIA knows this. Recently, Dawn Meyerriecks, deputy director of technology development at the agency, said at an intelligence conference in Florida that the CIA is adapting to a new environment: the main rivals it faces are machines, not foreign agents.
Meyerriecks told CNN after the meeting that other countries have relied on artificial intelligence to track enemy agents for years. Then, she explained that in the current era of digital tracking and social media, it is very difficult for CIA spies to try to live in a presumptive identity. As a result, the modern world is increasingly evolving into an environment unsuitable for human espionage. But the CIA will not give up. The oldest spy agency in the United States is undergoing a transformation: from an organization that sends people around the world to gather information, to a computer that is more effective in accomplishing the same task.
For this shift, the CIA spent more than 30 years preparing.
The 1984 government document referred to the "AI Steering Group", which was established the previous year. The organization is responsible for providing monthly reports on the status of artificial intelligence research and development for the head of the CIA.
In a declassified document written to the Director of the CIA in 1984, the chairman of the Artificial Intelligence Steering Group wrote:
The research and development of artificial intelligence has begun. These areas include expert systems, natural language processing, intelligent database interfaces, image understanding, signal interpretation, geographic and spatial data management, and intelligent workstation environments.
Even though most people think that AI is pure science fiction, the CIA recognizes the future represented by artificial intelligence technology.

This document calls for more training for agents, with a focus on supporting artificial intelligence developers in academic and professional environments, and an open source artificial intelligence information collection facility for government agencies to share.

According to Meyerriecks, at least 30 countries have the ability to use existing CCTV camera systems to do this. This means that anti-spyware tools have the upper hand in the international "hide and seek" game, that is, the global intelligence community.
With the development of satellite tracking and geospatial intelligence, human espionage will not have the opportunity to fight the next generation of artificial intelligence.
