1200 households in Fuzhou light candles to participate in the "Summer solstice lights off" environmental protection and energy saving

At 8 o'clock on the evening of the 21st, the central square of Hualin Yujing Community in Fuzhou City was very lively. Many residents turned off their home lights, TVs and computers, took their children to the square, lit candles and sang together to pray for the compatriots in the disaster area.

The 21st is the summer solstice. On the longest day of this day, 1,200 residents of Hualin Yujing Community participated in the eco-friendly energy-saving activities of the Summer Solstice Lights, which was carried out by the Green Home Environmental Friendly Center and the Friends of Nature Group Fuzhou Member Group. The lights were turned off for half an hour.

There are also many environmental volunteers who turn off the lights in their homes and units, and the owners of some large buildings, business owners or shops also respond to the initiative to close the exterior lights of buildings or shops for half an hour.

It is estimated that the half-hour light-off activity of the community on the evening of the 21st will save 300 kilowatt-hours or save 3000 kilograms of raw coal, and reduce carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide emissions to 3000 kilograms and 3 kilograms respectively.

Summer solstice lights off

The light of the summer solstice originated in 2000. At that time, California had a one-month blackout on and off. The US environmental protection group initiated activities to solve the problem of insufficient power by turning off lights and saving electricity. California first held an electrical event. At that time, there were three major contents in the light-off campaign: the lights were turned off at the same time, the air-conditioning was set at 26 ° C, and the large-scale home appliances were used when the peak was off. As a result, the power consumption was effectively reduced.

In 2003, Japan also launched the summer solstice lights-off campaign, calling on millions of people to participate. In 2006, nearly 40,000 places (including department stores, convenience stores, playgrounds, etc.) in Japan participated in the campaign to reduce carbon dioxide collective lights. During this period, energy savings totaled more than 810,000 kWh, equivalent to at least 300 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. In 2007, during the three-day event, at least 63,000 locations were closed from 20 to 22, and the lighting was reduced by about 2.93 million kWh.

Taiwan has also successfully held three summer solstice lights-off activities, attracting many buildings and citizens including the Taipei 101 building, the world's tallest building.

On June 22, 2007, the Friends of Nature Environmental Organization held the first summer light off event on the mainland. On September 23, 2007, as part of the large-scale experience of energy saving and emission reduction, part of the landscape lighting in the Wangfujing area of Beijing was extinguished for half an hour between 20:00 and 20:30.
