SDN/OpenFlow Help: Cloud Network Moves to Open/High Integration

The cloud network will develop towards open interconnection and high integration. The rapid rise of Cloud-network IntegraTIon services has prompted telecom, network services and data center operators to create more flexible, low-cost and easy-to-integrate connectivity through software-defined networking (SDN) and OpenFlow technologies. A more complete cloud service for enterprises or consumers.

Mike Sapien, Principal Analyst, Ovum Enterprises

Recently, multiple types of Cloud-network IntegraTIon (CNI) services have emerged to build a network on the cloud, or "cloud on the cloud." For such services to function effectively, applications must be strongly integrated and cloud services and related network services must be combined. This includes enabling end users to use the network and network connections between different cloud service resources and vendors. If any telecom company wants to gain a foothold in the enterprise management service market, it should have a plan for cloud network integration.

US Telecom Business Forces Cloud Network Integration

Telecommunications companies have always had an advantage in the cloud services market because they have mastered the network, but consumers rarely benefit from it. However, this situation is about to change.

In 2013, AT&T announced the launch of NetBond with IBM to provide personal virtual private network (VPN) access to IBM's cloud data center. At the same time, Level 3 CommunicaTIons and Equinix data centers in the United States also announced interconnection with Amazon Web Services. Verizon also now offers a private Internet Protocol (IP) secure cloud interconnect solution that provides secure, uninterrupted network connectivity across data centers in the corporate network. The solution will work through Verizon's global IP network, Terremark's Host Control Center and Equinix Center. This is the most promising cloud network integration proposed at the moment, which has stimulated other telecom companies to develop similar plans to integrate global network resources and make full use of cloud services. In addition, cloud providers, system integrators, and data center operators have embraced cloud network integration to develop business opportunities.

American telecommunications companies have mastered most of the domestic enterprise market, so it is not surprising that they are pioneers of cloud network integration. Global communications providers will need to develop smart networks and be ready to provide integrated network connectivity for different cloud services and resources. The network needs to be smarter, better able to grasp the pulse of the application, and immediately respond to the application and end user performance. French telecom operator Orange and global communications company Tata CommunicaTIons have shown signs of moving towards end-to-end applications in this area, and Ovum predicts that they can make breakthroughs in this area. Other telecommunications companies, network service providers and cloud service providers with networks should be good at using resources to imitate them. However, there is a network advantage but no value-added function or specific benefits to consumers. Said very bad.

Cloud Services has become a "cloud on the cloud" service

In the past two years, many operators have focused on public, private and hybrid cloud services. It is now obvious that most of the vendors' cloud services have evolved into cloud service networks or "cloud on the cloud" services. Computer computing, databases, applications, and information storage are all basic resources that need to be connected through the network in enterprise cloud applications. Some networks exist in the data center, while others extend beyond the data center to reach remote resources or users. Different cloud resources need to be connected through multiple networks, which greatly increases the demand for cloud network integration.

IT service providers, system integrators, carriers, cloud ecosystem vendors, and cloud service orchestration vendors must embrace open interconnect capabilities to deliver more dynamic, flexible, and multi-vendor integration. As the cloud market matures, corporate customers are beginning to accumulate experience, and open interconnect capabilities (including application interfaces) will be inevitable. Many vendors are aware of this trend, but there are still some technologies that stick to traditional closed, private business models, rigid conditions and rigid technologies.

SDN/OpenFlow will play an important role

As with all network-based technologies, Software Defined Networking (SDN)/OpenFlow will not be able to provide new services or better cloud connectivity on its own. SDN/OpenFlow applications will provide lower cost models, greater flexibility, and virtualized network resources.

With the increasing use of SDN/OpenFlow, these network platforms will enable carriers, network service providers, cloud providers and cloud ecosystem vendors to provide more flexible, cost-effective and more integrated connectivity for cloud services. When more and more vendors began deploying SDN/OpenFlow in 2014, there would be more innovative ways of connecting network and cloud resources.
