Latest LED dimming technology solutions

Dimming is very important for the light source, not only can get a more comfortable environment in the home, and can further achieve energy saving and emission reduction, and for LED light source, dimming is also better than other fluorescent lamps, energy-saving lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps, etc. Easier to achieve, the key to LED success is the intelligent energy-saving dimming solution that LED can further integrate high-efficiency and low electromagnetic interference. Therefore, we should add dimming function to various types of LED lamps.

Traditional dimming techniques can be divided into: linear dimming, PWM dimming, thyristor dimming, and tri-basic light. The use of LED dimming technology not only improves contrast but also reduces power consumption. However, LED lamps that are not dimmed still have their own market, which depends on the needs of consumers and the market. As for the dimming technology will be the trend of future technology development, manufacturers and experts have their own views.

   The latest driver products for LED dimming in the consumer market

(1) FL7730 with power factor correction, TRIAC and analog dimming capability

LED lighting has evolved into the most promising solution to replace common light sources such as fluorescent and incandescent lamps. However, designers face some obstacles in the application of residential and commercial LED lighting up to 20W, including bulbs, downlights (GU10/E17, E26/27, PAR30/38) and tube/bar lights. Due to the compatibility of the dimmer, it is quite difficult to implement the LED dimming capability in a conventional TRIAC dimmer configuration. In addition, small space sizes are still a consideration.

To help designers solve these problems, Fairchild Semiconductor has developed the FL7730 single-stage primary-side regulation (PSR) controller with power factor correction (PFC), TRIAC, and analog dimming capabilities. The driver features a unique analog sensing technology that enables flicker-free TRIAC dimming control from 0 to 100% light output. The FL7730 dimming voltage forms an internal CS compensation to reduce the regulated output current, and the dimming energy is compatible with more than 80% of the market's dimmer products.

As a dimmable driver, the FL7730 improves overall system efficiency and is suitable for high-voltage or low-voltage line inputs. With low-voltage input, the efficiency is as high as 83%, while at high-voltage input, the efficiency is 85%. Boosting power factor and reducing total harmonic distortion (THD), this device features constant on-time control with an internal error amplifier and low bandwidth compensator. Accurate constant current accuracy/control (± 5%) accurately regulates the output current and is independent of input and output voltages, enabling designers to achieve higher and better illumination quality. The operating frequency of the FL7730 is proportional to the output voltage to ensure DCM operation with the best power factor/THD and a simpler design.

On the other hand, the integrated protection function of the FL7730 improves the reliability of the system. It features open/short LED protection, thermal shutdown, cycle-by-cycle current limit protection, and a longer system life expectancy. Electrolytic capacitors (because the life of electrolytic capacitors is an important factor affecting the drive life), but also reduce the number of external components and reduce costs.

(2) DSP core compatible with 110 different 88EM8183 LED dimming drivers

Similarly, in the LED lighting market dimming, Marvell's newly introduced highly integrated 88EM8183 LED driver IC features a unique mixed-signal architecture and advanced dimming control technology to provide high-quality light output and dimming performance with incandescent lamps Beautiful. Deep dimming down to 1% of LED current is smoothly achieved, compared to similar LED driver solutions that typically only achieve 10% to 20% dimming. With this amplitude dimming, the human eye does not feel a great change in light intensity, so the 88EM8183 significantly improves performance.
