Nordic Semiconductor announced its first ZigBee wireless connectivity solution for use with the nRF52840 multi-protocol system-on-chip (SoC), an engineering release is available, and plans to release a production-grade Zigbee 3.0 certified version in the second half of 2018. The introduction of the Zigbee solution extends Nordic's portfolio of Mesh networking products (including Bluetooth Mesh and Thread) for smart home, enterprise and industry. Like other Nordic Mesh solutions, the nRF52840 SoC with the S140 v6.0 protocol stack supports Zigbee and Bluetooth 5/Low-Power Bluetooth concurrent operation.
Nordic's multi-protocol solution for the nRF52840 SoC enables use cases that utilize multiple wireless technologies, including Bluetooth 5 for interactive interaction with Zigbee intelligent lighting networks or Zigbee secure networks for location identification using Bluetooth beacons. This SDK contains several examples, including ZigBee and Bluetooth 5 concurrent operations for smart bulbs and switches.
ZigBee is a standards-based, global wireless solution that utilizes the IEEE 802.15.4 PHY and enables global operation in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed band (using other bands in certain geographic areas). It can achieve 250kbps raw data transmission rate in the 2.4GHz band (16 channels), depending on power output and environmental conditions, the transmission distance can be from 10 meters to 100 meters. The technology supports large Mesh networks (allowing nodes to forward messages to other nodes) and low-power operation to extend battery life.
