Oxygen sensing technology is a modern high-tech detection method integrating biotechnology and information technology. It measures the quality of seeds by measuring the oxygen consumption during seed germination under closed conditions, generally before seed germination, ie radicle The seed coat can be finished before it reaches out, which is direct, fast, real and reliable. It has epoch-making significance in the basic research and commercial application of seed quality detection. Seed germination must be accompanied by vigorous respiratory metabolism. Seed storage materials (mainly starch, protein, fat) must be oxidatively decomposed under aerobic conditions, converted into anabolic intermediates and provide the energy needed for physiological activities. It can be seen that respiration is the main indicator and concentrated expression of the life activities of the seeds. The strength of respiration is directly related to the level of seed vigor.

The oxygen sensor was developed in the Netherlands based on the principle of fluorescence quenching to identify the viability level of the seed by measuring the oxygen consumption during seed germination. Currently, there are two types of oxygen sensors. One is an automatic oxygen sensor detector, which can measure the oxygen concentration during seed germination in real time, and is suitable for the activity detection of small and medium seeds or seeds with low oxygen consumption. The other is a manual oxygen sensing detector that requires manual measurement of oxygen concentration and is suitable for the viability detection of large seeds or seeds with high oxygen consumption.

We measured the oxygen consumption of more than 100 different types of rice seed samples by automatic oxygen sensor. The correlation between the oxygen sensor measurement index and its vitality index was analyzed, and the best indicator of rice seed vigor determination was determined. The results show that there are differences in the detection time of rice types. Hybrid japonica rice, conventional japonica rice, hybrid japonica rice, and conventional japonica rice seeds only need 60h, 90h, 140h, 160h to complete the vigor determination, which greatly shortens the detection time. The detection time is reduced by more than half compared to the traditional viability assay based on the germination test.

In addition to establishing different types of rice seed oxygen sensor measurement standards and detection models, we also applied this technology to the vigor detection of wheat, corn, vegetables and forest seeds, and achieved good application results.
