Scientists use nanowire sheets to create flexible LEDs

December 12, according to foreign media reports, South Korea's Asian University (Ajou University) nanomaterials and display experts recently developed a large amount of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires made of paper-like zinc oxide thin sheets, developed A simple method for preparing zinc oxide/organic composite light emitting diodes (LEDs). This method uses a free-standing ZnO nanowire sheet, so it is possible to manufacture a flexible LED operating in the ultraviolet or visible light range at a low cost.

The researchers first used the vapor phase growth method to generate ZnO nanowires with a cotton-like appearance in the atmosphere of the laboratory. Then, by simply dispersing and filtering, the above-produced ZnO nanowires can be transformed into flexible paper. It is worth mentioning that this zinc oxide nanowire synthesis technology can be easily extended to an industrial scale, and the preparation of zinc oxide nanowire sheets requires only inexpensive equipment.

Freestanding film simplifies LED construction

A composite LED having a hetero-junction can be fabricated by simply pressing a zinc oxide nanowire sheet onto a P-type organic semiconductor material by simple mechanical stamping. The research team used several P-type organic semiconductor materials and studied their corresponding electroluminescent spectra.

This study not only demonstrates a new approach to the preparation of zinc oxide/organic composite light-emitting diodes, but also allows researchers to understand the mechanism of defect-related electroluminescence on zinc oxide nanowire sheets. At present, the defect-related luminescence is in the visible light range, and the intensity is much stronger than the ultraviolet light emitted by the ZnO crystal.

The team will then try to improve the performance of this composite LED. Possible methods include adjusting the luminescence properties by controlling defects in ZnO nanowires, or modifying the surface of ZnO nanowires with metal particles to utilize surface plasmons (sufrace plasmon). )effect. Possible applications for flexible zinc oxide nanowire sheets also include solar cells and sensors. See Nanotechnology 20, p.445203 (2009) for details.
