On October 22, Netease Technology News reported that the UK government has allocated £51 million to support the development of self-driving car testing facilities. This funding was awarded to four key projects led by HORIBA MIRA, Millbrook Proving Ground, TRL Laboratories, and the Warwick Manufacturing Group—marking the first round of investments under the government's automated driving test facility initiative. The project, which initially aimed to invest £100 million, was launched in November 2016 as part of the UK’s broader strategy to lead in autonomous vehicle technology.
HORIBA MIRA, based in Nuneaton, will expand its existing test track by creating a new route specifically for autonomous vehicles, allowing them to be tested within their operational speed range to ensure safety. Meanwhile, the Remote Applications Division for Challenge Environments at Millbrook Proving Ground in Belford County, along with the Karam Science Centre in Oxfordshire, will develop multiple simulated urban environments to test how self-driving cars perform in real-world conditions.
TRL Laboratories will establish a live testing environment in London’s Greenwich and the Olympic Park in Stratford, while the Warwick Manufacturing Group will create similar setups in Coventry and Birmingham. These real-world tests are crucial for refining the technology and ensuring it can handle complex traffic situations.
All these initiatives will be managed through the newly established Meridian Center, which will also work closely with other UK-based autonomous vehicle projects. Jim Campbell, director of the Meridian Center, emphasized the importance of maintaining the UK’s position at the forefront of automated driving technology. He stated, “As the British project continues to evolve, it is vital that our testing and innovation facilities remain among the best in the world.â€
Greg Clark, the UK’s Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy, highlighted the significance of the investment, saying, “Combining cutting-edge technologies with innovative business models is central to our modern industrial strategy. Accelerating the development of autonomous driving is key to achieving this goal and will help the UK secure a leading role in this transformative industry.â€
In addition to the funding announcement, the UK government also unveiled a new bill on self-driving cars and electric vehicles. The legislation includes plans to install EV charging stations at gas stations nationwide and introduces a new insurance model tailored for autonomous vehicles. This move signals the UK’s commitment to not only developing the technology but also creating the necessary infrastructure and policies to support its widespread adoption.
