UK government invests 51 million pounds to fund automated driving test facility construction

On October 22, Netease Technology News reported that the UK government has allocated £51 million to support research and development for self-driving car testing facilities. Four key projects—led by HORIBA MIRA, Millbrook Proving Ground, TRL Laboratories, and the Warwick Manufacturing Group—are the first to receive funding under the government’s automated driving test facility initiative. This £100 million project was launched in November 2016 as part of the UK’s broader strategy to lead in autonomous vehicle technology. HORIBA MIRA, based in Nuneaton, will expand its existing test track by adding a new route specifically designed for autonomous vehicle testing within a controlled speed range, ensuring safety and performance standards. Meanwhile, the Remote Applications Division at Millbrook Proving Ground in Belford County, along with the Karam Science Centre in Oxfordshire, will create multiple simulated urban environments to test how self-driving cars perform in real-world conditions. TRL Laboratories will establish a live testing environment in Greenwich and the Olympic Park in Stratford, London, while the Warwick Manufacturing Group will do the same in Coventry and Birmingham. These locations were chosen for their diverse traffic patterns and urban settings, offering realistic scenarios for autonomous vehicles. All these projects will be managed through the newly formed Meridian Centre, which also oversees the UK’s broader autonomous vehicle technology initiatives. Jim Campbell, head of the Meridian Centre, emphasized the importance of maintaining world-class testing facilities as the UK continues to push forward in this field. Greg Clark, the UK’s Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy, highlighted the significance of the investment, stating that integrating advanced technologies with innovative business models is central to the government’s industrial strategy. He added that accelerating autonomous driving development is key to securing the UK’s position as a global leader in this area. In addition to the funding announcement, the UK government also unveiled a new bill on self-driving cars and electric vehicles. The plan includes installing EV charging stations at gas stations nationwide and developing a new insurance model for driverless vehicles. This move aims to support the growing adoption of electric and autonomous transport solutions across the country.
