The concept of the Industrial Internet was first introduced by General Electric (GE) in 2012. According to GE, the Industrial Internet refers to a network that seamlessly integrates intelligent machines, advanced analytics, and human expertise. By connecting various devices through communication technologies, it creates a system capable of monitoring, collecting, exchanging, analyzing, and ultimately generating new insights. These insights empower businesses to become more efficient, agile, and intelligent, driving faster growth and innovation. In China, the Industrial Internet Industry Alliance defines the Industrial Internet as an ecosystem formed by the deep integration of the Internet with next-generation information technologies and industrial systems. It serves as a critical infrastructure for advancing industrial intelligence and digital transformation. While definitions may vary, there is a shared understanding of the practical value of the Industrial Internet. It aims to revolutionize traditional manufacturing by leveraging the power of the Internet to collect, process, analyze, and optimize data from industrial systems. This leads to the creation of automated, flexible, and intelligent production models that enhance efficiency and competitiveness. The idea of the Industrial Internet has evolved from long-standing enterprise management software and industrial applications. Today, China has established a comprehensive industrial ecosystem, including underlying protocols, Industrial Internet platforms, and specialized Industrial Apps. Recently, an analysis was conducted on major domestic Industrial Internet companies and institutions, revealing the distribution of the industry across different provinces. The data is illustrated in the following figure.

Beijing stands out as the hub with the highest concentration of Industrial Internet companies. To better highlight regional differences, Beijing’s data was removed and the remaining provinces were remapped, as shown below.

The distribution of the Industrial Internet industry in China shows a three-polar pattern, with Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong leading the way. The eastern coastal provinces are the most concentrated areas. Even when excluding economically developed regions like Beijing, Guangdong, and the Yangtze River Delta, other provinces such as Liaoning, Shandong, and Hunan still show strong development in the Industrial Internet sector. This indicates a growing trend of industrial digitalization across the country.
