The company has recently acquired Samsung Display’s back-end laptop liquid crystal display module (LCM) assembly equipment, significantly boosting its LCM production capacity. This move was made by Taiwan-based General Interface Solution (GIS), a subsidiary of Hon Hai Group, known for its expertise in touch panel manufacturing. GIS first started supplying Apple with LCM components for the mainstream 13-inch MacBook models in Q4 2017 and is expected to ramp up shipments starting from Q2 2018. The company is also preparing to supply LCM modules for Apple’s new entry-level 13-inch MacBook model, which is set to launch in the second half of 2018. According to industry sources, the notebook LCM business is projected to account for about 10% of GIS’s total sales in 2018.
In 2017, GIS reached a production capacity valued at NT$11.132 billion (approximately US$388.3 million). To support future growth, the company allocated an additional NT$4.861 billion in capital expenditure in early 2018, including NT$1.2 billion specifically for purchasing Samsung LCM equipment. This investment underscores GIS’s commitment to expanding its manufacturing capabilities and maintaining a competitive edge in the market.
Beyond LCM production, GIS is also working on enhancing its ability to integrate small and medium-sized OLED panels, aiming to diversify its product offerings. Additionally, to strengthen its financial position, GIS and its subsidiaries have secured a US$300 million syndicated loan from a Taiwanese bank consortium. These strategic moves highlight the company’s focus on long-term growth and technological advancement in the display manufacturing sector.
