The TDK Group introduces groundbreaking piezo actuators with haptic feedback and integrated sensor capabilities, known as PowerHapâ„¢. These innovative components deliver exceptional performance in acceleration, force, and response time, offering a new level of tactile feedback quality. By combining the sensitivity of various human touch receptors, these compact and powerful actuators significantly enhance the human-computer interaction (HMI) experience.
The new tactile feedback actuator is built on a multilayer piezoelectric plate with a cost-effective copper inner electrode. This advanced technology allows the actuator to operate at relatively low voltages, up to 120V. When activated, the piezoelectric plate expands slightly along the z-axis while contracting along the x- and y-axes due to the piezoelectric effect. To amplify this movement, cymbal-like structures on both sides of the platen increase the contraction by a factor of 15 along the z-axis. Initially, two models are available: one with 5N of force and displacements up to 100μm, and another with 20N of force and displacements of 200μm or more. Both variants come in compact dimensions—12.7mm x 12.7mm x 1.6mm for the 5N version and 26mm x 26mm x 2.4mm for the 20N version.
Compared to traditional electromagnetic actuators like ERM (Eccentric Rotating Motor) and LRA (Linear Resonant Actuator), piezoelectric actuators with haptic feedback offer superior acceleration, force, and response time. They also feature a maximum insertion height and are fully integrated with sensing capabilities. The 5N model achieves an acceleration of 5.0g with a rise time of just 2ms, while the 20N model delivers 15.0g of acceleration in only 1ms.
Unlike conventional actuators, these piezoelectric devices can generate stimuli across a wide frequency range—from 1 Hz to 1000 Hz. This makes them ideal for custom haptic feedback tailored to major human mechanoreceptors, enabling designers to create high-definition haptic profiles that improve user experience in next-generation HMI systems. These actuators find applications in a variety of industries, including automotive, smartphones, tablets, home appliances, ATMs, vending machines, game controllers, industrial equipment, and therapeutic devices.
Key features include:
- High force output: up to 5N and 20N
- Large displacement: up to 100μm and 200μm
- Ultra-low profile: 1.6mm and 2.4mm respectively
These advancements make piezoelectric actuators a game-changer in the field of haptic technology, offering a combination of performance, compactness, and versatility that sets them apart from traditional solutions.
