The first closed testing site for the development and evaluation of autonomous vehicles has officially opened. Named "National Intelligent Vehicles and Smart Transportation (Gyeonggi) Demonstration Zone Haidian Base," this facility marks a significant step forward in the advancement of self-driving technology. The test site, covering approximately 200 acres, is designed to meet the requirements for T1-T3 level autonomous vehicle research, development, and capability assessment.
This facility is part of the broader initiative called "Smart Vehicle and Smart Transportation Application Demonstration Based on Mobile Broadband Internet," a joint project led by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with Beijing and Hebei Province. It aims to create a comprehensive environment for testing and developing intelligent transportation systems.
The test site replicates the complex road conditions found in both urban and rural areas of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. It can simulate hundreds of static and dynamic traffic scenarios, including intersections, roundabouts, and pedestrian crossings. Equipped with an intelligent V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication system, it supports the development and testing of smart and autonomous vehicles.
In addition to realistic traffic environments, the site includes simulated traffic flow equipment such as background vehicles, pedestrians, bus stops, and construction zones. These features provide a complete testing environment for both passenger cars and small commercial autonomous vehicles, offering R&D support and performance evaluation services.
Looking ahead, Beijing plans to identify and open more road sections for autonomous vehicle testing. Currently, the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone has already established the country's first vehicle networking test road. A larger, more advanced test site is now under construction in the same zone, covering 650 acres. This new facility will include highways, mountain roads, rural roads, urban loops, railways, and tunnels, aiming to replicate a wide range of real-world driving conditions. It is expected to be completed by June this year.
Miao Wei, Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, emphasized that the strategic plan for intelligent connected vehicles is accelerating. New standards, traffic regulations, and laws regarding accident liability are expected to be introduced soon. Industry experts believe that the growth of the intelligent vehicle industry could boost China’s auto sector by one trillion yuan. Moreover, it will drive the development of 5G, car networking, big data, and artificial intelligence, creating new opportunities across manufacturing, IT, and transportation sectors.
