AGC develops a "quartz lens" for deep UV LEDs

Asahi Glass (AGC) has introduced a groundbreaking quartz lens designed specifically for use in ultraviolet (UV) LED applications. This innovation is expected to streamline the manufacturing process of UV LEDs and significantly lower capital investment costs. The prototype of this advanced quartz lens is scheduled to be developed by the third quarter of 2018, with mass production anticipated to begin in 2019. Currently, mercury lamps are widely used for air and water disinfection. However, the presence of mercury poses serious health and environmental risks. Following the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury in August 2017, the production and usage of mercury lamps are being gradually phased out. In response, deep ultraviolet LEDs have emerged as a promising alternative, offering similar disinfecting capabilities with a much smaller environmental footprint. They are seen as the next-generation solution for safe and sustainable disinfection. Despite their potential, UV LEDs still face several technical challenges. One key issue is the high cost and susceptibility to degradation of transparent adhesives used to bond quartz lenses and window materials. Another challenge lies in the soldering process during packaging. Traditional solder materials are too rigid, and due to differing thermal expansion coefficients between the package and the window, thermal stress can develop at the interface. This can lead to cracking or leakage in the final UV LED product. AGC’s newly developed quartz lens addresses these critical issues. By integrating the quartz lens with the window material, the need for expensive and fragile adhesives is eliminated. The new design also allows for direct packaging in a standard environment, without requiring large oxygen-free equipment. Additionally, AGC has developed a specially coated soft solder that reduces thermal stress, ensuring the UV LED remains durable and leak-proof. These advancements mark a significant step forward in making UV LEDs more reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. As the demand for mercury-free disinfection technologies continues to grow, AGC's innovations could play a crucial role in shaping the future of UV lighting solutions.
