Asahi Glass (AGC) has introduced an innovative quartz lens designed specifically for use in ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs). This advancement is expected to streamline the manufacturing process of UV LEDs and significantly lower capital investment costs. The prototype of the quartz lens is scheduled to be produced in the third quarter of 2018, with plans for mass production starting in 2019.
Currently, mercury lamps are widely used for air and water disinfection. However, these lamps pose serious environmental and health risks due to the toxic nature of mercury. Following the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury in August 2017, the production and use of mercury lamps are being phased out. In response, deep ultraviolet LEDs are emerging as a more environmentally friendly alternative. These LEDs offer similar disinfection capabilities without the harmful effects of mercury, making them a promising next-generation light source.
Despite their advantages, UV LEDs still face several technical challenges that need to be addressed. One major issue involves the adhesives used to bond quartz lenses and window materials. These adhesives are not only costly but also prone to degradation when exposed to ultraviolet light. Another challenge lies in the soldering process during packaging. Traditional solder materials are too rigid, leading to thermal stress between the package and the window due to differences in their thermal expansion coefficients. This stress can cause cracks or leaks in the final product.
AGC’s new quartz lens for UV LEDs addresses these two critical issues effectively. By integrating the quartz lens with the window material, the need for expensive and fragile adhesives is eliminated. Additionally, the solder used can be applied in a standard environment without requiring large oxygen-free equipment. The specially coated solder is softer, which helps reduce thermal stress and prevents cracking or leakage in the UV LED devices.
The development of this advanced lens marks a significant step forward in the evolution of UV LED technology, paving the way for more reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable disinfection solutions. As the demand for safer alternatives to mercury lamps continues to grow, innovations like AGC's quartz lens will play a crucial role in shaping the future of UV lighting.
