LED backlight battle resource layout is the key

The data shows that all the domestic LED TV panel sources are imported, some of which are open cell models, but the backlight module is still using the specified purchase method. From the source of LED panel supply in mainland China, taking the first quarter of 2010 as an example, the main sources of supply are LG Display, AMLCD, AUO, CPT (Figure 1), and most of the CPT supply is small. From the perspective of global LED panel production value, Japanese manufacturers are currently market leaders, and Taiwan and South Korean manufacturers are actively expanding production values ​​(Figure 2). From this point of view, the market concentration of the LED TV panel industry is very high, and the competition pattern of the LED TV market in the future is mainly limited by the resource allocation of the manufacturers.

As a key component of LCD TV backlights, LEDs account for 20% of the total cost of LCD TV panels. They have a complete and intricate supply chain, and the core materials are long lead times. The stable supply of LEDs will inevitably become panels and The whole machine manufacturer has a headache. From the structure of the LED backlight industry chain (Figure 3), there are three stages of epitaxial process, chip process and chip package, which belong to the middle and lower reaches of the industry. Diffusion sheets, optical films and chips are three key components. Due to the high concentration of the market, in the peak season of demand and the period of demand explosion, there is often a shortage of materials. At present, the diffuser r and the grain exhibit different degrees of shortage.

Figure 4 is to alleviate the shortage of resources. In the past two years of integrated mergers and acquisitions, panel factories and machine factories have played a key role (Figure 4), and the global LED field resource layout has taken shape.
On the chip side, the number of MOCVD is expected to increase gradually in the world (Figure 5). Among them, South Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers are the most active. Samsung, LG Innotek and AUO's Lextar will increase the number of MOCVD machines by two to three times. By the end of 2010, the global high-brightness LED die production capacity is expected to be close to 20 billion. However, the current market applications are still dominated by mobile terminal products and automotive lighting. The former two applications account for up to 55%, but TV backlight applications. The overall weight will still be difficult to break through 20%, so the relief of backlight out-of-stock conditions will take a long time.

Overall, Figure 5 shows the following trends in the LED industry in the coming year:
1. Key component shortages will gradually ease, but it will take time to increase supply significantly compared to market demand.
2. The Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers actively expanded their production, and the market focus was gradually transferred from the Japanese factory to the Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers.
3. Prices have steadily declined as the market has expanded, but there is no room for significant price cuts.
4. The share of TV backlights in the LED market will expand rapidly.
Therefore, the author suggests:
1. In addition to the vertical integration of the complete supply chain with the LCD panel factory strategic alliance or the high-generation TFT-LCD line, the TV backlight manufacturer's resource mastery may become the cost of the LCD TV in the coming year. The key factors, therefore TV manufacturers should pay close attention to relevant developments.
2. At the moment when the CCFL and LED backlight products are alternated for generations, the whole machine manufacturer should actively master the LED backlight resources, gradually replace the CCFL, and balance the internal supply chain structure and the adjustment of the manufacturing process.
3. Continuous improvement of LED backlight performance and cost from the design side is an important issue for panel manufacturers and complete machine plants.
4. In addition to LED backlighting, the optical device resources are also very important, and have certain thresholds, which will become a sought-after resource in the near future.
